Event Details

The Manhattan Project National Historical Park will hold a solemn ceremony to commemorate that event on August 6, 2020 at sunrise, 6:48 am, for one hour at A. K. Bissell Park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The public will be invited to ring the International Friendship Bell and then record their reason for ringing the bell. The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association will be providing music for the event. Social distancing and protective measures will be observed at the event. During that same time the park will also provide an opportunity for the public to virtually ring the bell on the park’s webpage and record their reason for ringing the bell. ”

We are also asking people to make cranes as messages of peace. The origami crane has become a symbol of resilience, strength, and peace. To celebrate these values and recognize the historical trauma of the atomic bombings, we are soliciting paper cranes from the public. Submit a crane with your personal message of peace written on it. These cranes will be saved in a time capsule and opened in 2045 on the 100th anniversary of the atomic bombings. Use standard origami paper size of no larger than 6×6 inch (150 x150 mm) squares. Mail your crane and message of peace to our address by August 5, 2020.
